Retro post: LU's Homecoming

This year we finally made it up to Liberty for homecoming, something Adam has been wanting to do for quite some time.

There was a lovely alumni tailgate followed by a legit college football game.

Liberty's football program has come quite aways since Adam cheering for LU, of course the school has continued to grow leaps and bounds since his time there too!

Towards the end of the game, we headed out and took a quick drive around campus before heading home to VA Beach. Look how impressive the stadium looks now!

One last photo before heading home...the fall colors in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia are just beautiful in the fall! I love it!

Retro post: Cabin Weekend 2011

We all arrived Friday night to relax and enjoy each other's company, so no photos because this photog was off duty for the evening. This year Samson had the pleasure of visiting the cabin with us and I am happy to report that he was VERY well behaved, even entertaining at times as he barked at horses and jumped off the porch. He loved running around in the woods and exploring the mountain and while I was nervous we wouldn't be able to relax with him there, we still managed to have a very relaxing weekend!

On Saturday, we had many visitors stop by and the Herndon/ Sydnor clan were among them! We met little Henry for the first time. He and Evelyn who also made the trip are almost the same age, but more on that later. Even Raph got to join us for the afternoon!

Reading to Sophia was surely a highlight for me...she's just so sweet and cute!

Then we all ventured down to the apple festival where we walked around, shopped for apples and enjoyed tasty treat like apple cider, apple donuts and apple fritters!

Even Samson got an apple treat...well maybe not an apple treat, but dog treat from Sophia.

After our adventures at the festival we all headed back to the cabin for chicken chili, a weekend staple and some down time.

Check out the NEWLY WEDS! They got married the weekend before in Richmond as mentioned in an earlier retro post and ended their honeymoon with us at the cabin. It was so fun having them there with us...we even surprised them with decorations where they always sleep to make it honeymoon appropriate...though they sleep in the hallway upstairs...how romantic right (wink)?!

This was Evie's first cabin weekend. I think she enjoyed herself too!

It was also Chris's first cabin weekend...I think it lived up to all the hype, of course!

Evelyn and Henry were both born this summer just weeks apart.

Henry meet Evie...Ahhh, new friendships formed at the cabin from a very young age.

Then Celeste, John and Arianna came by for a few hours.

So many sweet babies all around to play with!

After hanging out with everyone and finding some adorable things for Arianna at my second visit to the festival...night fell...which meant one more visit from Blah who was in the area apple picking with Doug (now a future Mr. Blah)! We hung out eating dinner and chatting about a possible winter trip to New York, which is ACTUALLY when and where they got engaged!!!

Dinner was followed for some by a nap by Justin's amazing bonfire...ADAM...

and for the rest of us by fire talking the night away and enjoying everyone's company...

until...my mom fell out of her chair when it tipped over randomly from being on uneven ground and I literally thought she was about to fall down the mountain!!! Luckily, this wasn't the case and after the shock wore off, we all went back to roasting smores, telling stories and doing whatever it is you do around a camp fire.

Always one of my favorite weekends of the year and this year was no exception.

Retro Post: Haley and Justin's Wedding Day

October 1st was Haley and Justin's wedding day.

Haley wanted a September wedding, so we referred to this date as September 31st since it wasn't a fall wedding. It was a beautiful late summer wedding.

The day began at the hair salon.

Pretty bridesmaid hair...

Then it was Haley's turn to have her makeup and hair done.

Her hair was gorgeous and that was just the beginning of her perfect bridal look. She just glowed all day...even at the salon in just her hair and makeup.

Some shots getting ready...sadly the lighting was a tad dark...but you still get the feel of the moments.

We arrived ahead of time at the venue for the first look and photos.

Haley even had a special reveal moment with her dad. It was very sweet.

I think we would all agree that getting to choose our own light grey dresses was fun and personal to each of our styles, while we still all stayed within the same hues. Haley sent us paint swatches when we began the search. I can't wait to actually wear mine again!

After all the photos had taken place, it was time to begin the ceremony.

Haley and Justin's wedding had wonderful personal touches from readings to their own vows that brought tears and laughter.

We're all married ladies now (and our hubbies had beautiful taste in rings)!

Retro Post: Haley and Justin's Rehearsal Night

After many fun pre-wedding festivities this summer, Haley and Justin's big weekend had finally arrived. Adam and I headed to Richmond for the weekend celebration.

Here are some highlights from the rehearsal evening.

We all reunited at the venue for the run through. It was so good to see everyone since we're all spread out...Shelb in Tennessee, Linds in Atlanta and Hale, Court and I still in Virginia.

Teacher of the Year Nomination

What a way to begin the work week...my principal came by my class first thing this morning, walks in and says "congratulation" as he shakes my hand. I am clueless and say, "Thank you, but for what?" He then says that I've been nominated for Teacher of Year! WOW! I almost cried when he said it. What an honor to even be nominated by a collegue. I work with so many talented educators at Pembroke Meadows Elementary and feel so honored words really can't get into it completely. Now I have homework...as a nominee I have to write an explanation of my teaching philosophy and how it impacts my work as an educator. My brain is already spinning away! I may not be Nationally Board certified (YET...hopefully this time next year I'll knock that one out too), but I've had some practice with educational writing in the past year thanks to that certification process and hopefully I can write a killer statement to present myself to the Teacher of the Year committee.

Reto post:Emma and Nima's Wedding

Back in September, I had the honor and pleasure of photographing Emma and Nima's wedding. It was such a great wedding photography experience and at the same time so special to see two of our close friends enter into a covenant relationship that day! Now here is the personal blog post from the friend's perspective that day...but I get to include the REAL photos since I also got to play the part of professional photog!

I began the morning with Emma at the hair salon.

From there we headed back to her apartment where her Bridesmaid had breakfast made for her...eggs, biscuits and delicious fresh fruit.

After a quick bite it was time for Emma's sister to start on her makeup.

Followed by accessories and THE DRESS!

The garter, which I got her for her shower...tea dyed and all to work with her dress.
Once everyone was ready, we jumped in my car and headed to Portsmouth for the big reveal!

We orchestrated the First look in Portsmouth, VA...even though it was a rainy day, we didn't let that get the best of us and even still held the first look outside as originally planned. We just added a pop of color with umbrellas.

We went to a couple picture perfect spots around downtown Portsmouth before heading to the church for the vows.

Last stop in P-town...Emma's favorite coffee shop. Their first "friending dates" had been over coffee, so it seemed appropriate to stop in for a cup of Joe in their wedding day best to pay tribute to the very start of their relationship.

Me...doing my photography thing...sadly I didn't get a good shot of Emma and I that day after being out in the rain and stuff...but I enjoyed being part of the day in such a special way that I don't need a photo to remember. I have a whole day's worth of all the special moments.

Then it was off to church to get the party started!

We arrived at the Life Center and everything had come together beautifully from the food to the decor.

Our lovely friends, the Whitlinger clan, that made the food a huge success!

Decorations...engagement pictures and candles provided the ambiance.

They had a tart instead of wedding cake to add a personal touch.

Ceremony time...our friend Barry played the part of the officiant.

Followed by the reception, which began with the couple's first dance.

Followed by LOTS of dancing! A good time was had by all.

To wrap up the evening before their big departure, they cut the tart and dessert was served.

Retro post: Chicago to meet the Carter boys!

Thais and Heath welcomed Baby Sam into the world this summer and I was lucky enough to head out to Chicago for a long weekend in September to meet the Carter boys...that's right two boys because I had yet to meet the other new young man in their lives, Isaiah. It was such a fun weekend catching up with Thais, helping with Sam and playing with I-Hi. I came with one goal alone, to sightsee the Carter family. I had no need to get out and see the sites of Chicago this visit...though we did get out for a few delicious meals and a nice walk through their neighborhood. I even got to take Isaiah to school with Thais and see all the angles of their life. I can't wait for our next visit!

Reto post: Haley's prewedding festivities

We had Haley's Bridal Shower in August. Since she has always loved photography, we decided to give the shower a photo theme. We printed her engagement pictures and hung them throughout the room, placed them in frames everywhere and even set up a photobooth.

This photo won the photobooth contest that Haley judged.

We also played a game where people had to write as many details as they could remember about what Haley looked like at the shower. She was out of sight while they brainstormed.

Then it was time for the gifts.

Then after some down time, it was time to take Haley out on the town for her bachelorette party. We took her to Press 626 for a delicious, fun filled dinner.

After dinner, it was time for some spicy gifts perfect for the bedroom and a trivia game.

Haley won panties for answering the questions about Justin correctly.

Then she opened lots of beautiful lingerie and a bottle of wine from each of us that we all labeled together for different occasions.

Then we made one more stop before heading back to my place to wrap up the night.

Shelby was the cutest prego van driver and Lisa and Linds spent some time with the gifts.

Haley seemed to really enjoy all the prewedding festivities and we were all left looking forward to her big day!

Retro Post: Emma's pre-wedding festivities

One weekend in August after my travels had finally slowed down, I had the pleasure of throwing my friend Emma's Bridal Shower and Bachelorette Party.

My friend Ally and Adam's intern Carter co-hosted with me to create the perfect shower ambiance. We crafted decorations and the night before and it all turned out beautifully.

From the shower, we all had a few hours to get ready for that evening's bachelorette festivities.

Nothing too crazy...just some lovely ladies headed out for a yummy dinner at Waterman's followed by some silly games and some pretty things for the honeymoon. It was such a fun night of celebration and it was funny for me because I somehow wound up being the only married lady in tow, haha!

It was a fun foreshadowing of how fun the wedding day would be.

Las Vegas Vacations!

For our vacation this year, Adam and I headed to Las Vegas for a new adventure.

My parents were also headed there with Anna and Chris to celebrate her 21st birthday.

We stayed at Excalibur.

The first night in town, we got acquainted with the area and headed out to celebrate with Anna since her birthday began at midnight.

Then we headed to Paris for it's club The Chateau.

It was a fun filled night that wrapped up with Anna finding her room completely decorated!

The next day my parents rented a cabana by the pool and it was fabulous!

A definite highlight from the trip. The pool at the hotel was great and Adam and I soaked in lots of sun throughout the week.

That night we went to our first show, Criss Angel's Believe for a little magic.

After the show we had Anna's birthday dinner at a yummy Asian fusion restaurant called Rice.

Then the next morning, we had an amazing breakfast at Hash House a Go Go...AMAZING!

Mom and Brad ordered the chicken and waffles, which the restaurant is known for and it was AMAZING!

Anna also got to blow out her candles at breakfast with a biscuit...talk about a birthday week!

(Adam and I went back again at the end of our trip and enjoyed the chicken and waffles a second time.)

That night we went to see my favorite show from the week...Cirque Du Soleil's KA...it was really good and I would even see it again.

The next day, we took the car and drove out to the Hoover Dam and Grand Canyon.

On the way we stopped for a helicopter ride from my parents. The views were spectacular!

From the Hoover Dam, we headed to the Grand Canyon.

The colors were beautiful and so unexpected!

To wrap up our dessert adventure, we got a little lost coming back from the Grand Canyon. At first I was all laughs, joking about surviving in the dessert and how Man vs. Wild would have me prepared, but then as the thought started to sink in it kind of scared me, but I just kept laughing. Well the more lost we got, the more nervous I became...for some reason my brain thought we were going to run out of gas and wind up stranded in the dessert...and we literally drove to the END of the road (which was unpaved) and the next thing I knew I was hyperventilating, crying and laughing all at the same time. That's right a panic attack and my sister and Adam were looking at me wondering what in the world was happening. It was pretty hilarious looking back at it even as I took deep breaths from a brown paper bag, which my mom was oh so prepared with.

See the road ended at a river...so we had to turn around and backtrack a bit, but we finally made it back to Vegas all in one piece.

The bright side of getting lost was great memories of this adventure and some fabulous photo ops.

We spent a couple more days in Vegas exploring the hotels and chilling by the pool and Adam and I even enjoyed some spa time. It was a great vacation!

Atlanta Trip to see the Deans

We've gotten to see quite a bit of the Deans this year between Shelby's wedding in Texas and Haley's upcoming wedding and all the events leading up to it, but Haley had never been down to visit the Deans in Atlanta, so she asked me if I wanted to take a road trip with her to visit and of course I said yes! I had been to visit once before and really enjoyed visiting and getting to check out Atlanta, so off we went.

We arrived in Atlanta just in time for a warm welcome from the extended Dean family as we joined in celebrating Darren's mom's birthday. It was a delicious home cooked meal, just what we needed after being on the road all day. Then we headed home with Lindsey and Darren to see their new place. It is beautiful and they certainly know how to make you feel right at home.

The next day we headed into Atlanta to do the tourist thing. We went to the Aquarium and Coke museum, which are right across from each other.

I have always wanted to experience one of these cool aquarium tunnels where the first are all around you. It lived up to my expectations.

The aquarium even had penguins and you could crawl below the tank to get a whole new perspective.

Then, we grabbed lunch downtown and it was off to the Coke Museum.

The museum even had a tasting room with lots of interesting international coke products.

and we got to take home a souvenir glass bottle of coke as part of the museum tour.

Don't they make a great advertisement! LOVE IT!

We headed back to the house and relaxed for a couple hours until Shelby arrived from Nashville to join us for the rest of the weekend.

That night we went out to dinner in Roswell, the cute town where Darren and Lindsey live.

We had a yummy Mexican dinner at Seveche and we wandered around to walk off dinner.

That night we just hung out and did what girls will do...TALK...about life, weddings past and future and even babies...yup, if you haven't heard, Shelby is expecting Baby Sterne this winter!

The next morning we enjoyed brunch at J. Christopher's and it was delicious of course.

From there the girls went out shopping...we were on the look out for a rehearsal dinner dress for Haley and of course we did some fun window shopping along the way.

That night we were all invited to join the Deans at a Braves game.

Darren's dad's company had box seats, it was quite the highlight of the trip.

The view was fantastic, the game was a blast and the Braves won!

We had SUCH a good time and were really spoiled with all the fun this weekend!

Sunday morning, we checked out Darren and Lindsey's church and actually got to experience its homecoming service, which was neat. Shelby then headed for home and we spent the afternoon chilling at their place and even cooked out that night.

Darren and Lindsey certainly know how to entertain guests and I can't wait to go back and hopefully have Adam join me in the future.

Thank you so much Lindsey and Darren for having us and for all the fun memories we created.

DC Boating

Adam did his first two weeks of reserve duty as an Airforce Chaplain this summer. He is stationed at Bolling Airforce Base in DC. I spent the second week up there with him, so we finished up the week by renting a boat from the base (a great deal!) and we took it out on the Potomac with the McCormicks. The weather could not have been more perfect. There was a break from the crazy heat we'd been experiencing and it was a gorgeous day!

We had the pleasure of seeing many of the monuments from the water, which was pretty cool.

Then we headed back the other direction and wound up near Mount Vernon.

This is where we decided to give knee boarding a go...

After our adventures with kneeboarding, which is pretty tough...we headed back to dock.

Since it is summer break for this teacher, I have been dappling more in the photography world. This past weekend I had the pleasure of shooting my first official wedding with my cousin in New York. It was such a great experience and I learned a lot while I was up there on the job.

Adam's 1st Triathlon

Adam recently completed his first triathlon in Hampton.

I went along to cheer him on and document the event.

He finished the race in just under three hours, which was awesome for his first time out. I was so proud of him because I know how hard he'd been training as he worked towards this goal.

Reagan's 1st Birthday Party

Courtney's Baby Shower

A few weeks back my friend Lisa and I threw a baby shower for our good friend Courtney.

We held the shower on Mother's Day because Courtney's family was going to be in town and we figured what better timing to celebrate this mom-to-be than on the day that celebrates all mothers. She's due in 10 days now, so I figured I better get this post up already!

We stocked the party with Courtney's favorite pregnancy friendly beverages and finger foods.

One of her good friends owns a cupcake bakery, so she made the CUTEST cake for the shower. I loved the fondant cut-outs.

Summer Fun to come...

I don't have my photos at work...so the blog recap is starting a little out of order...but no biggie, right! Today marks the LAST DAY OF SCHOOL...so what does this teacher's summer hold you might be wondering...well it won't involve quite as much jet setting as what I coined last year's "Summer of Travel"...but I'm looking forward to a wide variety of summer events.

The summer launches next week when I get to perform again in Shores Summer Spectacular, our church's Vacation Bible School...but this year its focus is on the whole family, so I'm really looking forward to how the new program comes together and impacts our church's families as they head into the summer. Then I'm headed back to Camp Watermarks for a week with our middle school Waves and high school Elevate students. Every year the camp has even more to offer our students and God always does amazing works in their lives, so I wait with anticipation to see how He is going to move this year while we're there, especially since this is the first year our high schoolers will be joining the Waves in all the fun.
A new addition to this summer's events is Adam's two weeks of Airforce work as a chaplain at Bolling Airforce Base, so I plan to go up and visit him for a few days while he's up in DC serving our nation's military. Not only will I get to see him in action and in uniform, but I'll get to catch up with good friends who live up that way too (Celeste and Arianna on my way up there and a bunch of XA ladies too who I usually get to see for "annual" trips to the District)!

New news...I also just found out I'm going to get to shadow my cousin who does wedding photography in New York the weekend before I head to DC to see Adam. I am SO excited for this experience. It will add something new to my photography portfolio, I'll get to see family and hopefully I'll be that much more prepared for photographing Emma and Nima's wedding!

Then there's some downtime, some standardized ESL test item writing and our 6th anniversary celebration...WOW how 6 years has flown by!

To round out July, Haley and I are taking a road trip to Atlanta to see Lindsey, her new house (which isn't so new to her anymore, but still new to us) and possibly Shelby who will have moved to the Nashville area by then so we'll see if we can find a meeting point.

In August, Adam and I are headed to Las Vegas for our own vacation. We'll be joining my parents, Anna and her boyfriend Chris who are headed to Vegas for Anna's birthday extravaganza. I'm SUPER excited about seeing the Grand Canyon too while we're out there...after seeing Yosemite, I am very excited about these type of breathtaking outdoor spaces! It won't be Italy, but it will certainly be a new adventure since neither Adam or I have been out to Vegas.

Finally, the summer will wind up with some pre-wedding festivities for my best friend Haley and my friend Emma. You all know by now how much I LOVE weddings and EVERYTHING that has to do with weddings, which includes all the showers and parties. The plans for Haley's Bridal Shower and Bachlorette festivites are well on the way since some of her guests will be coming from Richmond, so we wanted to give them plenty of time to mark their calendars. She will be getting married at the end of September. Emma's Bridal shower plans have begun as well with setting the date and beginning to chat shower details.

As you can see, my summer calendar is FULL of fun stuff and I can't wait to get started and that doesn't even include youth group surf days, hanging out at the pool/ beach with friends and more.

I LOVE SUMMER!

Chi Alpha 10 year anniversary

A few weekends back, Adam and I headed to Charlottesville for the weekend to celebrate Chi Alpha's 10 year anniversary. Friday night there was a wonderful worship service full of laughs, memories shared and a challenge from Pete to not forget our roots. I am so thankful God got ahold of me while I was at UVA. Wow how my decision to follow Christ has CHANGED my life!

After the worship service, a bunch of us headed to Little John's for a late night snack.

It was fun to run into a group of younger Chi Alpha grads when we got there.

Crazy to think that us "05 grads are the oldest alum for the most part since we were the first big graduating class.

Saturday morning, I headed over to Celeste and John's to meet Arianna Joy before that day's festivities!!

What a sweetheart!

From there Adam, Celeste, Arianna and I all headed to the gardens at UVA for a reunion brunch for all the Chi Alpha alumni complete with Bodos bagels.

It was amazing to see the new generation of Chi Alpha kids too!

It was also great to catch up with far away friends and meet new friends to Chi Alpha...like Blah's boyfriend, Doug.

From the gardens, Adam and I wondered over to the lawn for some pictures in front of the Rotunda...since Adam had missed out on these shots from our five year UVA reunion last year.

From there we grabbed Take it Away sandwiches and ate on the lawn.

Then Adam and I met up with a few of the Chi Alpha crowd at a vineyard over near Monticello.

Then we headed back into town to get ready for that night's Chi Alpha Development Dinner where I caught up with my fellow alumni, parents of current students and even Cav Man was in attendance.

Many people came from far and wide to hear how Chi Alpha has grown since its start my first year at UVA and how it was continuing to impact the university and the world for Christ.

It was a great night of celebration and commitment to supporting the fellowship in the years to come so that it can continue its kingdom work at UVA and beyond. The fellowship that started with 20 students when I was a first year has grown to be the largest student group on grounds with 450 students involved in core groups. I was so blessed to be involved in Chi Alpha while I was a student at UVA and I am always encouraged when I hear about how God's hand continues to move in and through the students at UVA.

For a while now I have been wanting to create a watermark for some of my photography, so finally after much brainstorming, research on trends and marketing, and gathering inspiration...my friend Crystal, who is a talented graphic artist, helped create what I was envisioning.

I just LOVE it! It is exactly what I had in mind.

How cool would it be to get this as a stamp that could be pressed almost like a notary's stamp!?

After arriving at our hotel in San Antonio, The Emily Morgan, we walked through the Alamo which was literally right across the street and headed over for our first visit to the Riverwalk.

A mini-vacation to the Outer Banks

This past week was my spring break, so we made plans with Nima and Emma to take a couple days and head down to the Outer Banks for a mini-vaction...and a BIG MOMENT!

This is the beach house we rented for the two days...

I had actually stayed there once before for a women's ministry retreat because one of church's deacons owns it. It is a GREAT house and we thoroughly enjoyed relaxing at such a lovely spot beside the beach.

Day 1: We wondered around Corolla, strolled down along the beach, grilled kabobs and chilled in the hot tub.

little did she know that this was only the beginning of a storybook weekend.Day 2: We packed a picnic lunch and headed to the Hatteras Lighthouse.

Along the way...we drove through Rodanthe...

It was the perfect day to fly a kite and just beautiful out!

Finally, we made it to the Hatteras Lighthouse.

Emma and I had never been to a real lighthouse.

It was beautiful so I grabbed my camera and took LOTS of pictures before we started our climb to the top.

It was a fun-filled and relaxing weekend and we are so excited for Nima and Emma's future together. Congrats guys!

One Act Play: The Pizza From Mars

This year I co-directed the comedy Pizza From Mars...otherwise known as Ten Actors in Search of a Cell Phone. We received three superior ratings from all three judges for the third time, but this time our scores were better than ever. We received a 99/100, a 98/100 and a 92/100 from the three judges who were professional actors from the Virginia Stage Company. Those in attendance said it was our funniest show yet. I was so proud of our cast. The show came together beautifully even through some challenging circumstances from changed parts and lost cast members to rewriting a male part into a female part. Every year the one act play season comes to an end I am reminded just how much I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the theater!

Here are some highlights from our play, The Pizza from Mars. I wish you could all have seen it! The play begins...Brandy has lost her phone and asks..."Excuse me, has anyone seen a cell phone? Could you check around your seats?"

The stage manager tries to get things moving along so the play can "actually start"...little does the audience know yet that THIS IS THE ACTUAL PLAY!

Katie: "Are we starting this or what?"

Stage Manager: "We're listening."

Katie: "Well obviously not to me!:

Katie comforting Brandy: "Oh, I lost mine once." Katie: "My ring tone goes...Baby Baby Baby AHHH!" Katie and Brandy: Gerald's message "BLAH!" Brandy continuing to go on and on about finding her lost cell phone. The stage manager losing patience for the lost cell phone search that is holding up the play. Brandy's boyfriend Kevin: "Read and copy, Brandy." Tony (with a Y): "Are you sure it's okay to come out in costume?"

Katie: "Do it." Brandy and Tony: "What!?!"

Katie: "Re-act the phone call."

Uh oh...confusion between who's spreading the gossip...Tony or Toni...watch out Tony!

Toni comes on the scene to defend herself.

Yet another secret revealed...Toni: "Celia (the stage manager) wanted to date Trey." Stage Manager: "Way to keep a secret!"

Toni: "Oops, I forgot that was a secret."

Stage Manager: "Well since you're still dating Danny, maybe Trey's like to go out with me sometime?"

Kevin, upon entering and seeing Brandy hugging the Pizza Boy: "You've crushed my baby chicken!"

Kevin: "I'm getting a slice of love right here." UH OH!

Tony: "Hankering to scratch in someone else's yard?!" in reference to Kevin's baby chicken.

This is one of my favorite shots...it would have been a perfect program cover!

Watch out Katie...Saint Brandy's calling you out for trying to steal her boyfriend.

Brandy uses Christine's line from the "actual" play when she gets publicly dumped...Christine gets mad.

Stage manager: "Don't do the baby chicken thing again."

Brandy finally remembers where she left her phone...she used it to call the "actual" pizza boy...not Tony who was playing a Pizza Boy. She tells him the money is in her dressing room and goes on to gossip some more.

Guess she didn't learn her lesson.

A visit to the windy city

I headed out to the windy city to spend the weekend with Thais while Adam and Nima were in Chicago for a youth pastor's conference.

The weekend started out with a fun behind the scenes viewing of the filming of Thais's new brainchild, DPR Friday. Check it out at their magazine's site...she's famous within the dental industry on the web now! What a natural!!!

That night we met up with the guys for dinner followed by donuts at a local spot...this was kind of an inside joke because Adam and Nima are somewhat obsessed with donuts, so when I asked what they were in the mood for that night for dinner...Adam answered "DONUTS". We wound up getting some great Mexican food, but we surprised the guys with GREAT donuts as well.

The rest of the weekend was spent enjoying brunch (my one request-good brunch at Nana's and Orange), touring the Carter's newest home, hanging out, catching up and shopping around town. (Thais got some cute new maternity wear for her trip to London and I found the perfect dress for Shelby's rehearsal dinner in Texas to wear with my red cowboy boots).

2.Visiting Thais in Chicago- I got to see their new place and enjoy amazing brunch and much much more...(separate post coming soon).

3. The One Act Play Festival...which by the way we got SUPERIOR SUPERIOR SUPERIOR with rave reviews!!! People who have seen our previous shows said it was our best one yet. I was SO proud of our students! They rocked out their characters and the comedy...(separate post coming soon).

4. Finishing my National Boarding Teaching Certification Portfolio...that's right folks it's in the mail! All that's left is an exam in April and then I wait to hear in November whether I will be Nationally Board Certified. It was a lot of work, but I really enjoyed the process and the reflective nature of all the portfolio entries.

5. Shelby's Bachlorette weekend...we showered her with love (at her bridal shower) and we had a fun filled girls night out with all her favorite ladies...(separate post coming soon). Can't wait for the wedding!

For those of you who don’t know me, my name is Colleen Young and I have been a Pampered Chef Consultant for the past couple of years. It has really been just a fun hobby for me that has brought in some extra income here and there for me and my husband. But now, this “extra income” is serving an amazing purpose: it is helping bring home our first child (or children). Adam and I are adopting!

Adam and I started doing missions work with our church almost six years ago. Our church became involved in Moldova, the poorest country in Eastern Europe, where we started ministering to a small orphanage that is home to about 100 kids. Since our first trip, our lives have not been the same. We knew we were carrying the burden to adopt and God started piecing together necessary steps that we needed to make. Over these last 6 years He has been paving the way for us to start a family and we know without a doubt that adoption from Moldova is His will for us.

We are in the very beginning stages of our adoption process and have a long road ahead. The youngest child that we will be able to bring home is 2 years old. We are also praying about adopting a sibling group, which means our family could instantly double

Our prayer is to be good stewards of our money and to utilize some of the avenues He has already placed us in. One of those avenues is my Pampered Chef business~ 100% of my commission that I make from your order will go into our adoption savings account that will be utilized to offset the accruing fees. Our fees include social work fees, government fees, travel expenses (we will need to travel twice to Moldova when our child is ready to come home), and the list goes on. So, throughout this process, I will be doing as much as I can through Pampered Chef to raise money for our adoption fees.

Some facts about Moldova:

It is located between Romania and the Ukraine and received its’ independence in the mid-90’s.
With that independence, came an incredible economic decline. Most of the children who are orphans are abandoned because the parents just can’t take care of them and go abroad to find work.

Print for another spot in the house...this photo was taken on the way to Yosemite...I literally pulled over on a pull off from the highway.

These will be in my master bathroom, which is currently void of any art on the walls. I may print them in Sepia tones since the bathroom decor is chocolate browns mostly.

I'm finally getting caught up...where has the last month and a half gone...I'll tell you...I've been working really hard on getting my National Board Teaching Certification, which I am SO excited about! There are only 80 teachers who are actually certified in my school district, so it's a pretty big deal. My portfolio is due at the end of March containing four papers where I reflect extensively on teaching ESL as well as two videos of my teaching (which I taped my second one today...whoohoo) and documentation of my accomplishments as a teacher. It's all well on its way, which is good because instead of giving myself a year like most people to get everything together and done...I gave myself three months after qualifying for a grant at the last minute for this year's entry...a little crazy, but who turns down free funding?! Oh well, you know me! It is quite an undertaking, but one I am REALLY enjoying and feeling challenged by...so I'll keep you posted. I take my exam in April and find out the final results next November (yes quite a while away)...but the benefits of getting certified will be awesome! So wish me luck...and hopefully I'll be able to update the blog a little more here and there between working on this project, helping with wedding plans for two of my best friends Shelby and Haley who are both getting married this year...not to each other of course...but the planning provides a great distraction when I need to focus my mind and energy on something besides education for a bit because I LOVE WEDDINGS, oh and I'm in the process of directing this year's one act play! (I'm finding I always need a project...last year's was planning Italy and other various summer excursions while juggling these other odds and ends sorts of things.) Love you all for loving me just the way I am...crazy projects, business and all!

Thais and I had the honor and pleasure of throwing Celeste a baby shower up in DC a few weekends back. The last time we were all together was this summer in New Orleans...our last girls weekend before that next season of life begins...motherhood! How exciting!

Retro post: New Year's All nighter highlights

Okay...so I realize we are WELL into 2011, but I got a little behind with some of my postings...so we pick up with the New Year's Eve All-nighter!

It was a blast and my sister Anna was even able to join us for an event filled, sleepless night!

After getting the students all checked in...we began with worship music...

Followed by a message from a friend and fellow pastor, David Klindinst...I even went to high school with this guy and he goes WAY back with Adam and Nima in youth group...small world right!

Then it was time to chill, chow down on pizza and snacks, play some crazy games and get ready for midnight!

A game where the person with the most signatures on their feet would win!

Last year at this time...Alicia realized Paul was the man God had for her...and now just a year later they are married! So exciting to see God's plan as in unfolded in their lives before our very eyes!

We started out Christmas morning at the Herndon's and Samson came along to lend a paw.

He LOVED opening presents.

We got Evan and Amy a date in (manly cookbook and DVD) and a date out (movie tickets and restaurant gift card).

Evan and Amy got Robin the COOLEST snowman...he goes in the bathroom and has a sensor, so he'll actually talk to you and say things like, "You're looking a little FLUSHED."
